Why You Want to Work There
Job descriptions that include responsibility for critical enterprise systems, 24/7 operations and demanding projects require flexibility on the part of IT workers at this public university in Bloomington, Ind. And the workers get flexibility in return. They might have the option of choosing a schedule that enables them to return to school or take care of their children. And that schedule might involve working remotely -- from home, a coffee shop or another country entirely. The dress code is flexible as well -- though what is considered appropriate attire depends on an individual's job function.

Staff gatherings: Employees' contributions are recognized at staff appreciation events and informal gatherings such as holiday luncheons and ice cream socials. IU IT staffers have a variety of accomplishments to their credit. Among other things, they serve as board members and hold leadership positions for a number of national organizations for IT and education professionals, such as EDUCAUSE, Internet2 and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. Moreover, they have delivered presentations at national and international conferences; published papers and articles in trade, technological and scientific publications; and won best practices awards for IT systems such as the IU Knowledge Base. IU offers a variety of training opportunities. Employees can take classes at the university or through continuing education programs. Or they can take advantage of training programs offered through the campus HR department, attend classes led by members of the IT department, work toward Microsoft Office certification, or study online on their own through Lynda.com. The university also offers a program for IT leaders, an annual statewide IT conference, and workshops for local IT support providers, and seminars on subjects ranging from project management to computer security.
