Broadband Internet Competition (Scientific American)

If you have ever wondered why the US has fallen so far behind the internet infrastructure, it really boils down to a single horrible decision made by the FCC in 2002.  Since then the US internet has become slower and even become more expensive than services provided in South Korea, Japan, Portugal, and even Italy!

In 2002 the FCC classified the internet broadband services as an informatioin service which put the broadband services in the same class as the providers of AOL, Comcast, and AT&T.  As result this has created the situation that broadband is not regarded as a method to communicate, but as a content provider.

The FCC recently began steps to reclassify broadband services as a telecommunication service.  As result, this will allow companies to compete for your business.  Companies will then be force to reduce cost of service and improve the communications infrastructure by providing better services.

If this changes does occur you will have the option to choose among any internet provider like you can with telephone providers.
