Add a Favicon to SharePoint 2007 and 2010

Favicons also known as website icons are a great method to  brand the browser's address bar and next to the page's name in a list of bookmarks.  The following IU Favicon is an example of this approach.

As shown below, a favicon appears next to the url in the address bar as well as in your browser favorites list.

SharePoint 2010 Development Site

SharePoint 2007 and 2010 both support Favicons using SharePoint Designer and a masterpage change.

Upload or create a new .ico file (16 x 16 pixels) and upload it to an image library "PublishingImages" in the SharePoint site using an application tool such as these.

Edit the master page (typically default.master) using SharePoint Designer and make the following changes.

  • Locate the <head tag and edit or add the following line somewhere between the <head and </head> tags:

   <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/PublishingImages/favicon.ico" />

  • Locate the <head runat="server"> HTML tag and scroll down and locate the <SharePoint:SPShortcutIcon tag and edit the IconUrl location of your favicon.ico:
    • <SharePoint:SPShortcutIcon runat="server" IconUrl="/PublishingImages/favicon.ico"/>

Publish and Approve the masterpage via SharePoint Designer and through Site Actions>Galleries>Master pages and page layouts
