What Is SharePoint 2010?

SharePoint technologies provides tools to rapidly respond to University business needs, enrich collaborative interaction by empowering the user the ability to share, create, and connect with constituents more effectively. The SharePoint technologies can be regarded as a gateway to connect with other users enabling us to share and gain knowledge more effectively create a repository for intellectual data for the organization by leveraging the working community.

SharePoint technologies provides cloud-oriented tools such as file services and Office Web Apps online to rapidly respond to University business needs, enrich collaborative interaction by empowering the user the ability to share, create, and connect with University constituents more effectively.

SharePoint 2010 is next generation of Business Collaboration Platform for the Enterprise and the Web. SharePoint 2010 now provides cross browser support for several commonly used web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, and Chrome.

In SharePoint 2010, a vast array of Business Intelligence tools are available which include Excel Services, Visio Services, Reporting Services, Integration Services, Analysis Services, Excel Power Pivot for SharePoint which enables users the power to create self-service BI solutions, and PerformancePoint Services which provides flexible, easy-to-use tools for building dashboards, scorecards, and key performance indicators (KPIs). Combining SharePoint with Microsoft Office Excel, Visio, and Access users are also able to make line of business connections to databases which are refreshed and updated as data changes.

New to the SharePoint technologies is Microsoft Office Web Apps which allows you to create and edit Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote documents directly from SharePoint using your browser which includes mobile devices.

SharePoint has also redesigned its Graphical User Interface "The Ribbon, similar to the Office 2010 interface" which improves the ability to manage content and website customization and authoring.

SharePoint has enhanced records management functionality which further enables the tracking of content by using Alerts and improved Workflow for routing and prioritizing content. Document versioning, tasks, surveys, discussions, announcements, and calendars continue to be supported.

SharePoint continues to provide improved integrations for Exchange two-way calendaring, assigning tasks, and mail-enabled document libraries which allow you to archive e-mail discussions as they happen, save e-mailed documents, and show e-mailed meetings on site calendars.

The added value of the personal SharePoint My Sites has also been enhanced and improved making the task of locating and connecting others within the University easier. The new blogs improves your ability to contribute to the University by publishing your knowledge and then creating tag clouds and relational connectors to more easily locate important data.

Enhanced wiki support allows you to copy and paste content and images directly into SharePoint which makes deployment of important information easier and quicker to achieve.

Taxonomy services and Managed Metadata services are also new to SharePoint 2010.
