Adobe .pdf No Longer Opening From The Server

It's a common practice to manually add the PDF icon so that SharePoint displays PDF documents in a library and more information can be read in this Microsoft Support KB - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837849

Microsoft SharePoint 2010 changed the default behavior for handling PDF files from opening these files from the server to instead prompting for download. To reverse these changes to behave as it did in SharePoint 2007 you will need to modify the docicon.xml file.

  • Navigate to
    • Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\60\Template\Xml
      • Change the Docicon.xml file adding the following to the Mapping key for the image for the .pdf.
        • It looks like this
          • <Mapping Key="pdf" Value="pdf.gif"/>
        • It should look like this
          • <Mapping Key="pdf" Value="pdf.gif" OpenControl=""/>
            • Notice the bold

You can also make this chamge using the CA in SharePoint 2010

  • You can also change your web application to use permissive
    • CA > Application Management > Choose the Web Application > General Settings > Manage Web Applicatons > set the Browser File Handling to Permissive
